  Accreditation and Standards

The Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission is accredited by the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) and the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).

Accreditation serves as an affirmation that the certification courses of the Alabama Fire College meet the standards of excellence as defined by the national accrediting body. It is a voluntary process, and only the most capable agencies apply for consideration. When a fire training agency applies for the certification seal of approval, these agencies study the policies, procedures and processes of certification testing and evaluation to insure compliance with the current NFPA standards.

The Alabama Fire College has been Pro Board accredited for over 25 years. In November 2005, AFC sought and was successful in obtaining accreditation by IFSAC. Over the few few years, we will continue to add courses under the dual accreditation standard. Where the accreditation standard of the two agencies differ, AFC elects to meet the more stringent standard.

The following Alabama Fire College certification courses have been accredited by Pro Board and/or IFSAC:

Fire Fighter I, II, I/II
Apparatus Operator/Driver: Pumper, Aerial
Airport Fire Fighter
Rescue Technician: Rope, Confined Space, Trench, Structural Collapse, Surface Water
Fire Officer I, II, III, IV
Fire Inspector I, II, III
Fire Investigator
Public Fire Educator I, II, III
Fire Instructor I, II, III
Public Safety Telecommunicator I/II
Safety Officer: Health & Safety Officer, Incident Safety Officer-Fire Suppression
Hazardous Materials: Awareness, Operational, Technician, Incident Commander

Position on Reciprocity of Certifications Issued
by Other Accredited Agencies.

For Fire Fighter I : AFC will consider issuing reciprocal Firefighter I certification when the following two conditions are met:
1) The certification was issued by an agency accredited by either Pro Board or IFSAC.
2) The certification was issued after the requisite number of training hours as defined in the Rules and Regulations of the Commission. Currently 320 hours in specific topics.
For Other Certifications: AFC does not issue reciprocal certifications beyond Fire Fighter I. However, AFC recognizes certifications issued by agencies accredited by either Pro Board or IFSAC as pre-requisites for admission into subsequent courses.
