Emergency Medical Technician – Basic

You can become trained in basic emergency care and be confident that if a medical emergency threatens your family or your friends, you can provide important first-aid assistance in the critical early minutes of any emergency. Use your special experience for your personal satisfaction and security, or participate in the state certification procedures leading to registration as Emergency Medical Technician – Basic. This course is ideal for parents who want to be prepared for normal childhood emergencies, rural residents who live far from established emergency medical organizations, people who work with children (athletic team coaches, scout leaders, day care staff), industrial safety personnel, public safety personnel, including fire service and law enforcement, area high school students may enroll in the Basic-EMT under the Dual Enrollment Program with Shelton State.


Subjects that are covered in EMT-Basic include ambulance operation and scene techniques, hazardous material awareness, medical legal aspects. Upon successful completion of the course and 48-hours of clinical rotations, you may choose to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians exam to become nationally certified and state licensed. This also allows you to continue your emergency medical care training at a more advanced level, including the paramedic level.

EMT Basic Refresher

The EMT is responsible for a wide range of knowledge and skills which includes material originally learned, as well as new information resulting from the constant growth and evolution of the field of emergency medical care. In order to maintain current and up-to-date knowledge and skills, an EMT must regularly participate in training essential for quality patient care. The course contains six modules including preparatory, airway, patient assessment, medical/behavioral, trauma, obstetrics, infants, and children.


Basic Cardiac Life Support Instructor (BCLS)

This course is designed to train BCLS Providers to instruct courses in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). This course provides certification by the American Heart Association for teaching CPR to health care professionals as well as the general public.

Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) or (CPR) Provider

This course is designed to train health care providers and bystanders in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and recognition of signs and symptoms in respiratory and cardiac emergencies as well as training of the AED (Automated External Defibrillator). This course provides certification by the American Heart Association to health care professionals as well as the general public.

BTLS-Basic Trauma Life Support

BTLS is accepted internationally as the standard training course for pre-hospital trauma care, and is not only taught as continuing education course, but is also used as a textbook in many Paramedic, EMT, and first responder training programs.

BTLS courses give the student the knowledge and hands-on skills to take better care of trauma patients. BTLS stresses rapid assessment, appropriate intervention and identification of immediate life threats. The BTLS framework for rapid, appropriate and effective trauma care is a global standard that works in any situation.

BTLS courses combine classroom learning and hands-on skills stations. They also challenge the student with scenario assessment stations where learning is put to work in simulated trauma situations. BTLS courses are designed, managed and delivered by course directors, coordinators and instructors experienced in EMS, pre-hospital care and the BTLS approach.


 Advanced Cardiac Life Support Provider Course (ACLS)

This two-day course is designed to teach the principles of ACLS and their practical application according to the standards and guidelines of the American Heart Association.
Day 1: Group discussion, demonstration and teaching stations
Day 2: Teaching stations, written exam, and megacode evaluations.

The course objectives include the following:

  • Identify and describe the incidence and impact of sudden death.
  • Explain the roles of BLS and ACLS in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest.
  • Understand the proper technique for airway management, optimize ventilation, use of airway adjunct correctly and provide supplemental oxygen effectively.
  • Identify lethal and potentially lethal arrythmias and the hemodynamic consequences of arrythmias.
  • Understand when electrical defibrillation is needed, how to defibrillate safely and effectively, and how to perform cardioversion, synchronization and unsynchronization.
  • Describe the proper drugs utilized to prevent or treat arrythmias and relieve pain and anxiety.
  • Identify the proper drugs utilized to alter vascular tone as an inotrope and chronotrope for the heart.
