Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations

This course is based on NFPA 472: Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents. Successful completion of this course and may lead to IFSAC and Pro Board certifications. This course is for emergency response personnel who may be first on the scene of a hazardous materials emergency. First responders at the awareness level are expected to recognize the presence of hazardous materials, protect themselves, secure the area and call for trained personnel. At the operational level, the first responder uses the knowledge gained from the awareness level to act in a defensive posture to protect people, the environment, or property from the effects of an unplanned hazardous materials release. This course meets the requirements of the mandatory Awareness/Operational training in hazardous materials required by Title III - Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 and NFPA 472: Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents.

NFPA 1072, Standard for Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional Qualifications, 2017 Edition requires accredited agencies to update course materials and certification requirements to this new standard. NFPA 1072 was specifically created for the fire service to replace NFPA 472, Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents.

Therefore, for courses beginning on/after May 1, 2019, we will no longer teach/issue certification for the NFPA 472 levels (this includes these courses: Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations, Volunteer Fire Fighter Block 4: Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations, Hazardous Materials Technician, & Hazardous Materials Incident Commander).
